Annual exhibition of Estonian Painters’ Association’s UNTOLD STORIES

Annual exhibition of EPA Untold stories

Museum of New Art, Pärnu

March, 8 – May, 25, 2025

Everyone of us, as an individual, has a story to tell. Through time, artists have had an opportunity to sublimate the personal into creation, to develop a kind of meta language and sign system to practice an independent artistic ego or sovereignty.

Collective traumas and white spots of history have been spoken about in full voice in public from the beginning of Russian aggression since 2022. Estonia is getting itself rid of the scum of the red monuments and in spite of the distressing war threat and a difficult economic situation, there is still a kind of new freshness in the air, a new feeling of freedom, courage to name things what they are. ‘ `Untold Stories` seems to indicate to something that has not been possible to be talked about before or has not even been wanted to be told?

I think, that it has not been told enough about how well Estonia has been doing during the new independence period, what big steps have been taken in the chance of our environment in the last thirty years, how beautiful our country really is! May-be Estonians have been superstitious enough not to brag about their great joy, or does it feel not decent to whoop about Estonia as a wonderland while happiness has not yet reached to everyone?

The organizers do not want to prescribe the tonality of artworks, everybody’s story has its value, the mosaic the richer, the more half tones it contains. The synopsis of the exhibition is formed to address/ involve most of the members of the Estonian Painters’ Association, specification of the concept and analysis forms on the basics of reactions and feedback through communication with the participants. So, the theme should be taken rather as a social research – the art of painting and painters are insubordinate anyway, rather individualists, than members of a group. That contains one of the greatest charm of the art of painting.
